"BALANCE" MEDITATION CHAIR & TEA TABLE

FURNITURE DESIGN \\ Year: 2nd-Year Graduate \\ Duration: 6 weeks \\ Patent US D723,818 S

Purpose:

To design two pieces of furniture that would compliment one another while expressing traditional techniques of wood joinery, minimizing material waste while limiting the addition of design ornamentation. Because the furniture pieces had to be created using a CNC router and fabrication materials were limited to one 4’x8’ sheet of plywood, the challenge for me was to create design pieces that still exuded a sense of gracefulness and dimensionality.

Conceptualization:

Meditation often carries different meanings that are dependent on the context; however, it most commonly refers to the practice of the internal effort to self-regulate the mind in order to promote relaxation, love, compassion, patience, and overall well-being. The balance meditation chair and tea table were designed to provide the user with ergonomic comfort and functionality during their meditative practice while accommodating their state of focus and balance with an aesthetically tranquil design. The overall cantilevered curvilinear form gives the meditation chair and tea table a natural form and also provides the chair seat with resiliency; challenging the user to remain balanced and focused.
