ARMONIOSO DINING TABLE

FURNITURE DESIGN \\ Year: Second-Year Graduate Student \\ Duration: 4 weeks

Purpose:

Design a table in which the use of wood should be prevalent (but not exclusive) and where the design embodies the production technologies and processes typical of solid wood and responds to the principle of functionality. The design was to comply with current safety standards, with ergonomic characteristics, and with both environmental and sustainable design characteristics.

Conceptualization:

I wanted to capture the implication of life and energy in the design and as a result I became intrigued by the double helix. The double helix is a well-known form that represents the complexity of a living being although it exudes elegance, simplicity, and purity in its curvilinear form and interior geometric structure. To me, the form exhibits a metaphorical relationship between the fluidity of life and the structure that is often found throughout it, and because of this, it exudes pure harmony. “Armonioso” or “harmonious” is what I began recognizing this design aesthetic as, leading me to name this table as such. Through the use of subtle transitional movement and an overall gentle curvilinear form, the Armonioso dining table can be appreciated from many different perspectives and through many different viewpoints as its expression transitions depending on the viewer – much as life does.
